  • Does Trek Portugal provide pick-up and drop-off at my hotel or accommodation?
Yes! We make every effort so that you have no worries during your trip with us. Our 4×4 vehicle will pick you up at your hotel, airport, apartment, friend’s house, bus, and/or train station. Some pick-up locations we service include, but are not limited to, Porto, Braga, Guimarães, V.N. Famalicão, and more (including in the south side of Douro river).
  • I have a family of six, including kids and grandparents. Can your tours accommodate us all together?
Yes! Our 4×4 vehicles have six seats available in total — including child seats. The vehicle is suitable for accommodating you and all the members of your family. For easier hiking offerings, our guides are prepared to take care of children and seniors. Do not give up on your plan to explore Peneda-Gerês National Park just because your family is coming along!
  • How should I dress for this tour?
The most important thing to bring is shoes! They should be comfortable for hiking. No slippers or high-heeled shoes, please. It is advisable to bring comfortable and flexible clothing to allow for better mobility during the walk. In the summer, especially on the Gerês Tour, shorts, a towel, sunglasses, and sunscreen are all recommended.
  • What level of fitness is required for the hikes during your tours?
Easy/moderate level. Our tours are for small groups (max. six people), allowing each person to go at their own pace.
  • Are your tours recommended for families?
Yes. We also have special discounts, and we can organize private tours for your family, if you wish. Children and seniors are welcome.
  • I'm a vegetarian. Do you have special meals for me?
Yes. We have a wide variety of dishes that can satisfy your needs (vegetarian/vegan/lactose-free/etc).
  • What does my lunch include?
The best gastronomy in northern Portugal. Roasted sausage, olives, green broth, green wine, cod dumplings, homemade cornbread, codfish, saw cheese, minced meat, melon with ham, cream cake, coffee or tea, local drinks. Lunch is in a typical restaurant where only locals and Portuguese tourists go.
  • What is the minimum and maximum age to take a tour?
We suggest from 3 to 80 years.
  • Do you have private tours?
Yes. Check out menu "Personalized Offers".
  • What are the best outdoor activities for team building?
Rafting, kayaking, traditional cooking workshops in the villages, hiking, canoeing, or others on request. If it is outdoors or in the mountains, we can do it, and we always have a solution. If you’re looking for private tours for your company, school, friends, or bachelor/bachelorette party, we have a tour package for you.
  • What happens if someone gets hurt during your tours?
All our guides are trained in first aid and are always equipped with a first aid kit.
  • Do you also take tours on rainy days?
Yes! We know enough people in Gerês who will open their houses to welcome us. However, we try to organize the best way for the tour not to be on rainy days. Either way, we choose trails where the impact of rainfall is lower.
  • What is the minimum and maximum number of people to take a tour?
The minimum is two people and the maximum is six. For other numbers, please contact us in order to present a solution.
  • Are canyoning and rafting dangerous?
Everything is dangerous if you do not follow the rules. All our activities are prepared and accompanied by professional guides certified by the competent authorities. They will ensure your safety so that you only have to worry about the fun.
  • Are your tours available in French, Italian, or Portuguese?
The official language of our tours is Portuguese or English. If you want a specific language, you will have to ask us.
  • What type of insurance do your tours guarantee?
We have two insurance policies covering company liability and personal liability, so we always ask for full names and dates of birth before starting the tour.
  • What is the starting point of a tour?
Our tours can be done from anywhere, as long as it is feasible. Our company is configured to go to Porto, Guimarães, Braga, Famalicão, Terras de Bouro, Vieira do Minho, Povoa de Lanhoso, Amares, and Vila Verde. For other locations, including the south side of the Douro river, please contact us.
  • What can I expect to never happen on your tours?
We do not take you to crowded places (in the Peneda-Gerês National Park). In our select places, there may be more than a group of people, but as a rule we do not like places with much noise, because we love the sounds of nature. We do not stop at gift shops unless you request it. During the tour, no alcoholic beverages will be provided, other than those available during lunchtime. Our guides will not deal with you as a tourist, but rather as a friend. We always have a plan B, in case of adverse weather, vehicle problems or, worst case scenario, if someone gets injured… We have an alternative plan to get around everything that might prevent your day from being as perfect as you wanted.

Peneda-Gerês National Park

  • How can I explore Peneda National Park on my own?
You can take public transportation from your location to the Gerês National Park. In the villages, you may try to hike some trails (be aware that some of them may be restricted and you may need a special license) or find a local company that can take you to the beginning of the tracks. If you decide to go with Trek Portugal, you will not have any worries about transportation, as we will take care of everything from the beginning to the end of your journey. Do not forget that Trek Portugal will be the easiest way to discover the best trails and places in Peneda National Park.
  • Does your company go to the Peneda-Gerês National Park all year-round?
Yes! During the fall/winter season, we can admire the incredible brown color of the landscapes and the power of the waterfalls. In the spring/summer season, it will also amaze you as you can swim in spectacular lagoons and feel the powerful smell of flowers. Throughout the year, we visit small villages where you can meet the locals and discover the other side of Portugal.
  • What is the best time of year to enjoy the Peneda-Gerês National Park?
It depends on the purpose of your visit. If you want to swim in the lagoons, it is only possible from March to October. On the other hand, if the idea is to walk, discover new places (and people), and relax, you can also do it in the winter. You can go whenever you want, knowing that Peneda-Gerês National Park is always a great choice!
  • What is the weather like in the Peneda-Gerês National Park?
In the winter we can have a few rainy days and snow about five days a year at the highest mountain levels. Generally, temperatures range between 0°C 32°F and 10°C/50°F.

Spring and autumn are usually moderate. We can have some rain with temperatures that oscillate between 8ºC/46ºF and 23ºC/73ºC.

In the summer, you can have average temperatures between 18ºC/64ºF (min.) and 30ºC/86ºF (max.).
  • What is the best vehicle to visit Peneda-Gerês National Park?
An off-road 4×4 vehicle, of course! The others may be faster, but we can go everywhere. The only way to get to the best places in Gerês is to have a 4×4 vehicle and a special license to go there, which Trek Portugal has.
  • What kind of wild animals can I see in the Peneda-Gerês National Park?
If you are lucky, you may see wild goats, or maybe even the Iberian wolf. Butterflies are constant, and lizards are found anywhere, especially between spring and autumn. Wild flowers bloom everywhere from spring to autumn. Hiking the same trail every day, you can spot different types of flowers. Throughout the National Park there are some bushes, some of them well known for being abundantly used to make tea. The Hipericão and Carqueja are the most famous, but you can find more.

Reservations and Payments

Trek Portugal

  • How does Trek Portugal support eco-tourism?
Some of the money you pay goes directly to local communities. Our goal is to help these communities develop resources to sustain and preserve the forest. These communities develop the local economy by creating new jobs for young people. With your help, we can help the sustainability for life in the field for the next generations.
  • What is the main difference between Trek Portugal and other companies that visit the Peneda-Gerês National Park?
Our philosophy is that people are not tourists. People are people, just like us, who love to travel and nature. So our guides are not the “typical” tour guide, they are friendly people who love nature. Trek Portugal is also licensed to visit some off-road trails in special places in Gerês. We love what we do, and our work only makes sense if at the end of the day you tell us: “It was the best day during my stay in northern Portugal.”
